How to Brew – Pour Over
Here's a step-by-step guide for making pour-over coffee with the proper ratio.
I'll describe the steps and then generate images for reference.
Tools and Ingredients:
- Freshly ground coffee (medium grind, like sea salt)
- Filtered water (heated to 195-205°F)
- Pour-over dripper (e.g., Hario V60, Chemex, or Kalita Wave)
- Paper or metal filter (depending on your dripper)
- Scale (for precise measurement)
- Kettle (preferably gooseneck)
- Mug or carafe
Coffee-to-Water Ratio: 1:16 ratio is ideal. For example:
• 20g of coffee → 320g (or mL) of water
Instructions
Step 1: Heat Water
- Heat water to 195-205°F just below boiling).
Step 2: Prepare the Filter and Dripper
- Place the filter in your dripper.
- Rinse the filter with hot water to remove any paper taste and preheat the dripper.
- Discard the rinse water.
Step 3: Weigh and Grind Coffee
- Weigh 20g of coffee beans.
- Grind them to a medium consistency, like coarse sea salt.
Step 4: Set Up the Dripper
- Place the dripper on your carafe or mug.
- Add the ground coffee to the filter and gently shake to level the bed.
Step 5: Bloom (First Pour)
- Start your timer and pour 40-50g of hot water over the coffee grounds.
- Allow it to bloom (release gases) for 30-45 seconds.
Step 6: Continue Pouring
- Slowly pour the remaining water in small, concentric circles, keeping the water level consistent.
- Pour in stages, aiming for 2-3 total pours to reach 320g of water.
Step 7: Finish and Serve
- Once the water has drained completely (around 3-4 minutes total), remove the dripper.
- Stir the coffee in the carafe or mug for even flavor distribution.
Enjoy
- Enjoy your freshly brewed pour-over coffee!
